(*)How to get to the island of La Gomera

The island of La Gomera can mainly be reached by ferry or by plane, combining routes with the neighbouring island of Tenerife.

Getting to La Gomera by ferry

The most common way to reach La Gomera is by ferry from the port of Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife. Several companies operate daily routes to the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera, with an approximate duration of between 50 and 70 minutes.

Whether arriving by plane at Tenerife North or Tenerife South airports, there is a very good network of “Guaguas” (bus in Canarian Spanish) to travel from the airports to the port of Los Cristianos.

Flights to La Gomera

La Gomera has an airport located very close to the town of Playa de Santiago. There are regular flights only with the airline Binter, from Tenerife North Airport and from Gran Canaria. The flight lasts around 30 minutes and offers a fast alternative to the ferry.

With good planning, the journey to La Gomera becomes part of the experience, combining sea, air and the unique landscapes of the Atlantic.

In the Kingdom of Gara and Jonay!!!

The legend of Gara and Jonay is one of the most beautiful and tragic stories of the Canary Islands, deeply connected to the landscape and the soul of La Gomera.

Tradition tells that Gara, a young woman from La Gomera of great beauty, and Jonay, a young man from neighboring Tenerife, fell madly in love. Their love was born in secret after meeting during a visit between islands, but it was soon marked by fate.

The wise men of the island predicted misfortune after a disturbing sign in the sky, interpreted as a bad omen for their relationship. Their families, fearing the prophecy, forbade their love. However, unable to be apart, Gara and Jonay decided to flee together.

Jonay crossed the sea in a risky journey—according to the legend, even by swimming—to be reunited with her. Together they escaped to the mountains, seeking refuge in what is now Garajonay National Park.

But when they found themselves pursued and with no way out, they chose to be united forever rather than live apart. At the top of the mountain, they sharpened a lance made of cedar wood and, in an embrace, drove it into their chests, dying together. From their eternal union comes the name "Garajonay", which today gives life to the park that keeps their memory.

It is a story of impossible love, of courage and of connection with nature that still seems to whisper among the mist and the laurel forests. On every trail in La Gomera, the echo of Gara and Jonay lives on.

La Gomera is a small Atlantic paradise where wild nature and tradition coexist in perfect harmony. For those seeking an authentic destination that awakens all the senses, this is the place.

At the heart of the island beats the magical Garajonay National Park, an ancient laurel forest declared a World Heritage Site. Walking along its mist-covered paths is like traveling to another time, ideal for hiking and trail running enthusiasts who seek unique routes among ravines, forests and endless viewpoints.

For mountain bike lovers, La Gomera is pure enjoyment: winding tracks, climbs up to the clouds, descents into the depths, and volcanic landscapes that change with every kilometer. From the heights down to the sea, every route offers spectacular views of the ocean and dizzying cliffs.

But La Gomera is not only nature: its ancestral culture is alive in every corner. The fascinating Silbo Gomero, a whistled language unique in the world, can be discovered, as well as traditions and the hospitality of its people.

And when the body asks for a reward, the local gastronomy wins over without effort: the unmistakable almogrote, wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce and volcanic wines that tell the story of the island in every glass can be savored.

La Gomera is not just visited, it is felt. It is adventure, it is culture, it is flavor… and it is that place that always calls for a return.
